Events are presented from the perspective of a naive young woman without material means, named "Ich". Working as an attendant for a wealthy American woman, in her Holliday at the Cote d'Azur, she meets Lord Maxim de Winter, a very wealthy Englishman, who soon becomes her husband.
After the marriage, she accompanies him to the enigmatic and unfriendly house on the Manderley Estate, where it seems that the spirit of Rebecca, the first Lady de Winter, who died a year ago in a mysterious accident at sea, is still present.
Viewed with suspicion and treated maliciously by Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, whose devotion to Rebecca appears to be pathological, the very young Mrs. de Manderley feels increasingly overwhelmed by her new life, while her husband, Maxim, seems that he is sinking deeper and deeper into the secrets of the dark house. An unexpected event disturbs the lives of the characters even more, threatening to reveal unsuspected mysteries.
